If you have difficulty learning material to present in
front of an audience or simply want to gain some
important insights into the learning process behind an
actor’s preparation for a role, then consider Learning
Patter.
In fact, in an independent review, Bryce Kuhlman at
My Lovely Assistant wrote "If you're a speaking
performer, this is a must-have."
This manuscript began life as a very short study of
the process of memorizing a script and taking it from
rote memorization to organic presentation. Written
as an analysis of my own personal process and my
observations in the studio and classroom, it was born
out of my own struggles towards achieving an organic
state of presentation.
It was very brief as it was meant as a personal
checklist or set of guideposts for me and was shared
with only a small number of friends and performers in
my local area. As I began to speak about this idea,
both as process and as an intellectual exercise for
self-improvement, it became evident that a lot more
detail was required.
This led to the development of the expanded
manuscript you have here.
It is still brief and to the point, but it is surprisingly
detailed for its length. It takes you through the six
stages of learning, explaining how an actor, magician
or speaker needs to prepare and what must happen at
each step along the way.
Simply by understanding these six stages, you as the
presenter will have a better understanding of where
you are along the path. Simply knowing where you
are will give you the insight you need to move your
presentation forward. You will also discover that the
effort is always more than you think, even what you’d
like, but this understanding makes the effort far less
daunting and the results more rewarding.
But wait, there’s more!
You’ll rediscover some memory techniques you may
have forgotten from an earlier time in your life, some
exercises for discovering new ways of looking at your
presentation and some exercises for relaxing.
The manuscript ends with a short list of suggested
readings for advanced study.f you have difficulty
learning material to present in front of an audience
or simply want to gain some important insights into
the learning process behind an actor’s preparation for
a role, then consider Six Steps to an Organic
Presentation.
Based on Ron’s critically
acclaimed manuscript
called “Learning Patter”,
this demonstration/
presentation teaches the
participants how to take a
raw presentation and take
it to the next level — an
"organic" or "natural"
presentation.
The manuscript originally
the focused on the
presentation of magic tricks, but it turned out to be
a resource useful to anyone required to speak in
front of an audience. So much so that award-winning
Broadway actor and magician Bob Fitch wrote in the
introduction:
”Learning Patter” by Ron Guttman is for you!
Not only does it give you a road map for structuring
your words and thoughts, it gives you tips on how to
personalize (very important), memorize, rehearse
and present that material.
There's no lengthy theory here, just down to earth
straight talk; a primer on the tools that can and will
elevate your performance.
There's something here for everyone: magicians,
story-tellers, corporate speakers and actors alike.
Also important notes on two important subjects:
breathing and relaxation. I feel anything that opens
our eyes to new thoughts and raises our own levels of
awareness needs to be read, then followed. This is
such a book.”
This interactive presentation follows the six step
process with audience members demonstrating both
the challenges and the necessary skills to overcome
them.
Ideal Audience Size: 12-up (classroom, theatre or
conference seating)
Running Time: 1 hour
